Rugged military displays are designed for a range of challenging field environments such as forward operating bases, inside naval vessels and armored vehicles, and outside on patrols. They include handheld and portable displays as well as designs with rack-mount or panel-mount configurations and stand-alone monitors.

Overview
Ruggedized Monitors
Ruggedized displays are designed to withstand a variety of demanding conditions that COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) monitors may not be exposed to. They may be engineered with metal enclosures, dampening mounts and shatter-proof glass in order to withstand high levels of shock and vibration. They may have extended operating temperature ranges and be subject to stringent EMI (electromagnetic interference) and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) standards to ensure that they are not affected by and do not interfere with the operation of other equipment.
Military-grade monitor screens may be enhanced with a variety of features such as scratch-proof and anti-glare coatings, and may also be designed to be compatible with night vision goggles. Their construction may also involve a process known as optical bonding, which uses a layer of resin to fill the gap between the LCD module and the covering panel. Optical bonding provides a range of benefits including increased durability and prevention of condensation.
Military Touch Screens
Ruggedized military touch screen monitors are often used when operation via keyboard or mouse is not convenient. Common touch screen technologies for military displays include projective capacitive (PCAP) and resistive capacitive, which can both be used with gloves.
Monitors for military applications such as ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) and weapons targeting may include built-in image enhancement technologies. These can process video feeds to reduce the impact of visual impairments such as low light, fog, smoke and haze.
Rugged Display Military Standards
Military standards that rugged monitors and displays may have to meet include:
- MIL-DTL-901E (shock)
- MIL-STD-810F (environmental)
- MIL-STD-461E (electromagnetic emissions)
- MIL-STD-167B (vibration)
- MIL-STD-740B (airborne/structureborne noise)
